Overview

A closer look at your care.

The macula is the small central region of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision — reading, recognising faces, watching television. When it deteriorates, that clarity fades first. Age-related macular degeneration is one of the leading causes of significant vision loss in people over 50.

There is no cure, but the right treatment at the right time can slow progression considerably and, in wet AMD, preserve useful vision for much longer. That is why early detection and regular review matter as much as the treatment itself.

2

Regular follow-up appointments to track response, adjust the plan and catch any conversion from dry to wet AMD early.

Good to know

Questions, answered.

No. A cataract is a clouding of the lens at the front of the eye and can be cured with surgery. Macular degeneration affects the retina at the back and currently has no cure, though treatment can protect what vision remains.

In wet AMD, early injections often stabilise vision and can partially improve it. They work best when started before significant damage has occurred, which is why early referral matters so much.

Yes. When AMD affects one eye, the other eye carries an elevated risk. We monitor both eyes and advise on the Amsler grid test for daily self-monitoring at home.
